“Costa Rica Sports Tours made me never want to go home.”
That’s what Ryan Dicanio of Loras College had to say about his team’s trip to Costa Rica. The Loras College Men’s Basketball trip lasted for 10 days, but the experiences and memories will last a lifetime.
The team travelled with their full roster which allowed the coach to split them into two teams to play double the number of games. This allowed the team to test players in different combinations and get their players lots of playing time.
The first full day found Loras Teams 1 and 2 kicking off their adventure with a walking tour of the capital city of San Jose. This was an excellent opportunity for the men to visit such iconic locations as the National Museum, the Legislative Assembly, Supreme Court, Central Park, and National Theater. Not only were there plenty of intriguing sights and photo opportunities along the way, but it was the perfect chance to learn a little bit about the history of this beautiful Central American country.
After lunch, both teams competed in their first friendly game, bringing home wins for both Loras teams. In fact, both teams carried their winning streak throughout the trip, overcoming all of their opponents and returning home with a perfect, undefeated international record!
The entire trip was both exciting and educational. One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to a local school for children living in extreme poverty. The men spent a morning playing with the children, practicing a bit of basketball on the playground, and making the kids feel special. Everyone had lots of fun, and learned a lot at the same time.
“It was the best experience of my life and helped me get closer with my team. I also got to grow as a person through new experiences in Costa Rica.”
– Alex Kitzman (Player)
Of course, there were plenty of adventurous excursions planned. In addition to hiking through the rainforest in search of waterfalls, the men partook in a white water rafting adventure, a zip line tour over the rainforest canopy, and a catamaran tour of the Pacific Coast. They were sure to squeeze in a bit of relaxation time, too, soaking in the natural hot water springs heated by an active volcano, and spending plenty of time on the beach.
We’re confident that this once in a lifetime experience will stay fresh in the memories of these men for years to come!
